Attaching in Adoption
Fear, Reality and Hope

Many adoptive parent consciously or unconsciously wonders about their ability to bond with their child. Questions swirl in our minds: “Will my child love me?, “Will our love be enough for our child?” “What if our child has a stronger bond with my husband than with me?” “Is my child the only one that acts this way?” “Why does my child act this way?” “How do we maintain the emotional health of our entire family?”

We know that proper attachment is the most fundamental issue in a successful adoption. In this session we will discuss what ‘attachment’ means and provide solutions and strategies to deal with specific attachment problems.

We will examine self-esteem issues, childhood grief and limit-testing. The sessions will incorporate technical explanations interspersed with personal stories of struggle and ultimate success. As an added bonus, we will provide sure-fire stress release strategies that will help caregivers be emotionally available when they are most needed.

In this session you will learn:

• What specialist are really saying when they discuss attachment issues
• The role of self-esteem, childhood grief and limit-testing in attachment disorder
• Real-world strategies for dealing with attachment disorder and clear, focused plans for guiding kids to emotional health
• Who you can turn to for help: it really does ‘take a village’
• How you can help yourself so that you can help your child
